TERRY EGAN

March 28, 1945January 13, 2005

·        On behalf of the many co-workers and friends who had the pleasure and good fortune to have known and worked with Terry, we extend sincere sympathies to Nina, Greg and all family members in their time of grief.

·        Terry’s career in the public service spanned through four decades and important work in the Ministries of Attorney General and Children and Family Development.

·        Terry’s career commenced as a Correctional Officer at Oakalla in 1966.  Over the following years he was involved in an innovative community based bail program in Vancouver,  the planning, opening and management of the Vancouver Pre-trial Services Centre, the management of community corrections and family justice services as well as  the New Haven Correctional Centre and was the Director of Programs at the Burnaby Correctional Centre for Women and the Burnaby Youth Custody Services.  In addition, Terry worked closely with the aboriginal communities on matters related to the administration of the criminal justice system.

·        In all the years and in all of his roles, Terry made many friends and achieved many accomplishments.

·        Terry’s greatest contributions were not in buildings of bricks and mortar or in the crafting of words in policies and directives.

·        Terry will be remembered for the relationships he established and fostered and for the skills and knowledge he imparted to others that have extended beyond his retirement and will succeed his passing from this world.

·        Terry consistently articulated a vision based on values and principles and that focused on the needs of the clients and the staff who served them.  When many were mired in the minutia of the daily work demands and details, Terry would elevate the discussion to the important values and focus on the purpose of the work that needed to be done.

·        Terry was a positive voice for everyone; in a work environment that is often difficult and focused on negative behaviour, he was a constant source of encouragement and hope.

·        As much as he exemplified caring and generosity in his family and private lives, Terry provided comfort to his fellow workers in times of need and persistently promoted the health, safety and well being of everyone.

·        It is with sadness we experience the loss of a good friend and co-worker.  In the celebration of his life, however, we are comforted by the many positive memories and contributions Terry made to his profession and to everyone with whom he came into contact.

·        Our thoughts and prayers are with Terry and his family at their time of loss and in the celebration of his life.
